This spring, I embarked on a voyage of a lifetime. I sailed aboard Holland America’s majestic Oosterdam. This journey took me through the shimmering waters of the Eastern Mediterranean. Our adventure unfolded as we sailed to the enchanting destinations of Rhodes, Greece. We also visited Alanya, Turkey; Limassol, Cyprus; Mykonos, Greece; and Santorini, Greece. Each port of call offered a unique tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking beauty. Let me take you through the highlights of this unforgettable trip.

Rhodes, Greece: The Island of Knights
Our first stop was Rhodes, an island that whispers tales of knights and ancient civilizations. The medieval Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of cobbled streets. These fortifications transport you back to the era of the Crusades. The Palace of the Grand Master, with its imposing towers and grand halls, is a must-visit. As you stroll through the Street of the Knights, you can almost hear the clatter of armor. You can also hear the murmur of old-world conversations. For a taste of natural beauty, visit the Valley of the Butterflies. It offers a serene escape filled with lush greenery. The air is filled with fluttering wings.

Alanya, Turkey: A Jewel on the Turkish Riviera
Next, we arrived in Alanya, a gem of the Turkish Riviera known for its stunning beaches and rich history. The Alanya Castle is perched high on a rocky peninsula. It offers panoramic views of the azure Mediterranean Sea. It also overlooks the bustling city below. The Red Tower (Kızıl Kule), an iconic symbol of Alanya, stands as a testament to the city’s maritime heritage. For a touch of adventure, visit Damlataş Cave to see awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites. Then, unwind on the soft sands and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Cleopatra Beach.
Limassol, Cyprus: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
In Limassol, Cyprus, I discovered a vibrant city that seamlessly blends ancient history with modern charm. The Limassol Marina is a chic waterfront area perfect for a leisurely stroll. It offers upscale shops and restaurants with stunning sea views. The ancient ruins of Kourion feature an impressive Greco-Roman theater. They also showcase intricate mosaics. These elements provide a fascinating glimpse into the island’s storied past. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the nearby village of Omodos. The village’s traditional wineries offer tastings of Cyprus’s finest vintages.

Mykonos, Greece: The Island of the Winds
Mykonos welcomed us with its iconic white-washed buildings and vibrant nightlife. The charming alleys of Mykonos Town (Chora) are filled with boutique shops, cafes, and art galleries. Each turn reveals a new delightful discovery. The iconic windmills, standing tall against the azure sky, offer a perfect photo opportunity. To experience the island’s legendary nightlife, visit the beach clubs of Paradise Beach. They promise lively music. Dance until dawn. Alternatively, the quieter beaches of Agios Sostis provide a peaceful retreat with their golden sands and turquoise waters.

Santorini, Greece: The Epitome of Greek Beauty
Our final destination was the breathtaking island of Santorini, famed for its dramatic cliffs and stunning sunsets. The village of Oia is perched on the edge of the caldera. It offers mesmerizing views of the deep blue Aegean Sea. The village also showcases the island’s iconic white and blue architecture. The sun dips below the horizon, and it paints the sky with hues of orange and pink. It’s easy to understand why Santorini is considered one of the most romantic destinations in the world. To connect more deeply with the island’s history, visit the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. It is often referred to as the “Minoan Pompeii.” These ruins reveal fascinating insights into the advanced civilization that once thrived here.

Sailing on the Oosterdam, I experienced the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Each port of call offered its own unique charm. From the medieval splendor of Rhodes to the romantic vistas of Santorini, it was enchanting. This cruise was more than just a vacation. It was a journey through time and culture.
